Title

Experimental Investigation and Modeling of Overheating in Aerospace Alloys during Milling

Abstract

Finish machining is a key step in the manufacturing of aeronautical components, as it directly influences their mechanical strength and service life. Beyond geometrical considerations, it alters the material surface properties, collectively referred to as surface integrity. Thermal overexposures, particularly in the form of overheating defects, can significantly degrade these properties and reduce the lifespan of machined parts.

This PhD work aims to better understand and predict these phenomena by linking machining conditions to their effects on surface integrity. To achieve this, a physics-based approach has been developed, combining experimental investigations and modeling.
The research has enabled a more accurate description of cutting forces and thermal effects during machining, highlighted the significant role of tool geometry, and proposed methods to predict material modifications.

These results pave the way for the development of tools to better control machining processes and prevent critical damage related to machining operations.
