Abstract
Oblique Angle deposition (OAD-PVD) was used to synthesize zirconium oxide thin films (ZrO2) with different out-of-the-plane substrate/target angle (from 0° to 85°) and in-plane orientation (0° and 180°). The main objective of this work is to develop and characterize biocompatible coatings for hip prosthesis implants (that have a « complex » shape). The OAD method is dedicated to the deposition of thin films in this geometry and helps understanding the influence of the specific particle’s incidence angle on the final surface morphology and microstructure of the ZrO2 thin films. This study is based on both experimental (DC magnetron sputtering) and multi-scale numerical (Monte Carlo codes SRIM, SIMTRA, and Virtual Coater NASCAM) approaches. Structure and texture of the ZrO2 coatings are studied by XRD. The microstructure and surface morphology were observed by SEM, while EDS provided coating composition. The biocompatibility, bioactivity, and wettability of ZrO2 films on titanium alloy substrates are evaluated to demonstrate their osseointegration potential for hip prostheses. AFM tests are conducted to study the properties of the material at the nanometric scale, as well as adhesion measurements. Hardness and elastic modulus of ZrO2 thin films are evaluated by nano-indentation. The experimental and numerical results complement each other and provide a better understanding of the phenomena that occur during the growth of the films and their influence of film properties like thickness evolution and column tilt angle.Doctoral advisors
