Thesis Topic

Modelling mold/metal interactions for steel casting
Modélisation des interactions moule/métal en fonderie d'acier

Abstract

This thesis focuses on issues related to mold/metal interactions. The study will be done through the development of a fully instrumented foundry tool representative of the problems related to the steel casting process. This tooling will be designed with an aim of becoming Safe Metal's development standard for designing new parts or developing new steel grades. The objective is to remove the technological obstacle being the so-called “Black Box” mold concept in which most mold/metal interactions are difficult to control due to lack of data. This research therefore deals with different aspects of the part casting (molding, filling, solidification, etc.) and is based on technological and scientific issues calling mainly on experimental analysis, technology development, as well as numerical modeling.
