Summary:

In order to improve wear and oxidation resistance, protective layers could be deposited on parts. In the case of mechanical applications, theses layers have to strongly adhere to the surface to ensure their protective function.
The coatings used in mechanical applications are mostly nitride compounds (TiN, CrN, …), or carbides (TiC, TiCN, …), PVD deposited. For many applications, coating adhesion could be improved.
THEMPO (Traitements HybridEs de substrats Métalliques élaborés par voie classique et par métallurgie de POudres) is an innovative project, which consists on the combination of two surface treatment process. This kind of hybrid treatment involves first a metallic PVD coating (Ti, Cr, …) and then a thermochemical treatment. The aim of the thermochemical treatment is 1 : the conversion of the metallic PVD layer into a nitride or a carbide compound, and 2 : the interdiffusion between the PVD layer and the underlying substrate (Pure iron and 316L stainless steel in this project), in order to join the whole and ensure the adhesion of the coating. During the thermochemical treatment, intermetallic phases could appear at the PVD layer/substrate interface. Their influences on the adhesion of the final compound layer will be analysed.
Another aspect of the project is the influence of the microstructure (especially the grain size) of the substrate on the adhesion of the surface layer. Powder metallurgy by SPS (Spark Plasma Sinterging) allows an easy control of the microstructure. This process is the most convenient way to analyse its influence, and compare with “classical” forged steel substrates.
THEMPO is the result of the collaboration between the LaBoMaP (Arts et Métiers Cluny, thermochemical treatments and PVD coatings) and ICB (University of Burgundy, powder metallurgy)
