Mould-metal interactions in steel casting: contributions of in-situ observation to the understanding and modelling of phenomena
Interactions moule-métal en fonderie d’acier : apports de l’observation in-situ à la compréhension et à la modélisation des phénomènes.
Abstract
In steel casting, the process determines the quality and performance of the parts. However, it is an elaborate system, with many parameters and often non-linear interactions. One of the most complex aspects is the use of so-called ‘black box’ moulds, in which most of the interactions between the mould and the metal are difficult to control due to the lack of data. In order to overcome this technological hurdle, Safe Metal is looking for ways to link simulation software packages to experimental measurements, as it is essential to be able to compare results from various sources. To do so, this thesis aims to define a reliable and repeatable means of visualising flows in a foundry mould during its filling. This research therefore takes into account all the constraints inherent to the casting process with the ‘black box’ sand mould concept and involves carrying out a series of trials using suitable technologies and then comparing them with simulations carried out simultaneously.
