Title
Hygro-mechanical behaviour of rotary-cut poplar veneers during drying: characterization and modelling
Abstract
Peeled veneers undergo deformations caused by the shrinkage of wood fibers during drying. This phenomenon remains poorly documented in the scientific literature. It is generally investigated either from the perspective of industrial processes or on larger wood elements, for which shrinkage is assessed at a global scale. This thesis therefore focuses on the behavior of thin veneers, whose deformations are strongly influenced by local variations in shrinkage. To address this objective, the development of waviness during drying was analyzed in order to gain a better understanding of the origin of veneer deformations. In addition, a non-destructive method based on light diffusion through the fibrous structure of wood was developed
to estimate local moisture content. Finally, a first numerical modeling approach was undertaken to reproduce some of the mechanisms identified through experimental observations.
